The Worthington Civic Band was formed in 1973, they have currently received a Worthington Creative Community Investment Grant from the City of Worthington. Typically, the band rehearses and performs year-round, only taking a few weeks off in the fall. The band is a traditional concert band with members ranging in age from their late 20’s to 80’s and with 45 to 55 members. The band members occupations are from a variety of backgrounds from educators, medical personnel, home makers, lawyers and many more occupations and retirements. In addition to local concerts, the band performs for many area retirement settings and collaborate with Junior and Senior High Schools Bands on concerts to promote “life-long learning”.
The band has traveled and performed in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, London, Disney World, Australia, Hawaii Italy Ireland, Scotland, Spain and Portugal. All members volunteer their time, paying their own way on trips. Donations received by the band are used for incidental expenses, such as music and instruments.
Their director, Linda Fox-Miller, played clarinet in the band for 28-years and was appointed the director in 2020. She graduated from Ohio State University with a Bachelor and Master’s degrees in Music Education and taught band at all levels for 33-years, retiring in 2007. While at Ohio State she studied conducting with Dr. Donald E. McGinnis and was a Spring “Honor Conductor”.
